The Sworn Translation of Family Record Books is essential for marriages, divorces and births in which one of the parents is a foreign national of a country where the official language is not Spanish.

Official Sworn Translation

An Official Sworn Translation is a special translation that can only be carried out by an official Sworn Translator authorised by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who will stamp the translation making it 100% valid throughout Spain.

The Family Record Book

The Family Record Book recognises and accredits the family relationship between a couple or between parents and their children. It is provided free of charge at the Civil Registry upon getting married or recording the name of a child if the parents are not married.

The Family Record Book is required for a multitude of procedures:

  • Marriages, Separations and Divorces
  • Wills and Inheritances
  • Obtaining of National Identification or a minor’s passport
  • Maternity leave, registration of children on a Social Security card or registration of residency
  • Application for a place in a nursery school or in a public/charter school

Do I need a Sworn Translation of my Family Record Book?

You will require a Sworn Translation of a Family Record Book if you need to carry out any form of official procedure in Spain, and your Family Record Book is written in a language other than Spanish.

It will also be required if the Family Record Book is written in Spanish and needs to be presented in a foreign non-Spanish speaking country, for example in China or Russia.

In any event, always communicate with the body or administration that requests the Articles to establish if a Sworn Translation of these documents is essential.
